Book of Common Prayer (BCP) is the short title of a number of related prayer books used in the Anglican Communion, as well as by other Christian churches historically related to Anglicanism. The original book, published in in the reign of Edward VI, was a product of the English Reformation following the break with work of was the first prayer book to . In the Prayer-Books of Edward VI. (, ) and Elizabeth () this Catechism bears the title 'Confirmation, wherein is contained a Catechism for Children.' This work has undergone, with other parts of the Prayer-Book, sundry alterations.

The Liturgy adopted in was the one with two significant changes. The first concerned the words at the act of communion which combined both the and in that order. This meant that the communicant first heard ‘The bodie of our Lorde Jesus Christe whiche was geuen for thee, preserve thy bodye and soule unto everlasting. The title of the rite in the Book of Common Prayer suggests the same interpretation: the liturgy is called “The Supper of the Lord, and the Holy Communion, commonly called the Mass.” The word and suggests that there is still some distinction between the name of the overall liturgy (the Supper of the Lord, and perhaps the Mass) and the Holy Communion as the moment.
